Sitting Still vs. Moving On
We’re all familiar with the seemingly ‘crisis’ situation of sitting still vs. moving on but since everyone’s in a uniquely different situation, how are we supposed to know what to do?
We put together a few things to consider when you’re stuck in that rut which will hopefully allow you to make a better decision when the time comes.
The grass isn’t always greener
As per the curse of social media, you will see your friends going out for beers on a Friday after work and past colleagues at a work event which naturally might give you the feeling that you’re missing out in your current job.
What you must remember in this scenario is that you will NEVER see the bad. No one is going to post a picture or status about their failure to make last quarters’ budget or gleefully announcing their latest round of redundancies, that’s simply not what people post on social media.
What’s important is to remain realistic. Everyone has their fair share of bad that comes with the good, and focusing on the good things that you have now will ultimately keep you happy and motivated in the long run.
Change is good but make it work for you.
Change is often interpreted as drastic – such as a change from one employer to another or even a total move between industries.
If a major change like that concerns you, maybe you could try something smaller. Try changing teams or projects within your own organisation or if you’re particularly adventurous, you could move offices within your company for a change of environment.
On the other hand, a drastic change between jobs/industries can be really exciting and having new faces/environments/projects can breathe life into a career you might have lost your passion for.
Remember that forwards can be backwards.
Progress doesn’t always flow in a linear direction. If your focus is to push your career to the next stage, you may have to take a step back from your current role.
It’s not uncommon to end up against a brick wall inside your organisation, maybe there’s no clear direction to climb or maybe there’s no position that you could naturally progress into. If you’re in this position, you could try up-skill internally (great way to get free education), up-skill yourself externally or as mentioned above, change your position internally.
Simply switching jobs is unlikely to come with an immediate promotion to the next stage in your career either. Instead, you may need to take a step back to a more junior role within a growing organisation and approach again with a more refined and diversified skill-set to achieve that promotion you’re looking for.
The key thing to remember when making this decision is that it is everyone is different and no two people can fit into the same box when it comes to these choices.
It’s all about YOU and what you want to achieve in your career.
