FAQs for Temps and Contractors
What’s the difference between temping and contracting?
While both offer flexibility, the main difference is in how you’re employed. Temps work for Crescent Consulting and we take care of your PAYE tax, and you get holiday pay, sick leave, and statutory holidays (with some conditions). Contractors are self-employed, billing for their work and managing their own taxes and ACC levies.

How often do temps get paid?
Temps are paid every two weeks, with payments processed each Wednesday. Your first paycheck will come on the first scheduled Wednesday after you start, then every two weeks after that. You can download our payroll dates here.

Do temps receive holiday pay and sick leave?
Yes, temp workers get holiday pay, sick leave, and statutory holidays, with some conditions. Crescent Consulting takes care of these benefits, making sure you don’t miss out on important workplace rights while enjoying the perks of temping.

What are the main benefits of temping?
Temping offers a mix of flexibility and opportunity. You can try out different jobs, build your network, and explore various industries without long-term commitments. It’s especially useful for newcomers to the New Zealand job market, students, recent grads, or people thinking about changing careers. It’s a great way to sample different career paths before settling on one.

How long do temp assignments typically last?
Temp jobs can range from a few days to several months, depending on what the client needs. Some assignments might even turn into permanent job offers, potentially changing a short-term gig into a long-term career.

What should I consider before starting contracting work?
Before jumping into contracting, think about your financial stability, as income can be less predictable. Check the market demand for your skills to ensure steady work. Decide if you want to be a sole trader or set up a company and figure out your rates. It’s important to understand what self-employment involves, including tax obligations and possibly needing indemnity insurance. You’re essentially becoming your own boss.

Can contracting lead to higher earning potential?
Often, contractors can earn more than permanent employees. But this comes with trade-offs: less job security and the need to manage your own benefits and business expenses. It’s about weighing higher potential earnings against increased personal responsibility.
